The role
An exciting opportunity to join an in-house Legal team in one of the fastest growing companies in the insurance sector. The successful candidate will sit across the Legal and Claims teams to advise on coverage, strategy and litigation through the life cycle of a claim, including subrogation and recoveries. The role also includes ad hoc advisory on legal trends and developments in claims and litigation.
The successful candidate will work across all lines of business (predominantly first party lines) and multi-jurisdiction, supporting claims teams in London, Ireland and Bermuda.
Key accountabilities
Work closely with claims teams across all lines of business in day-to-day claims handling, coverage analysis and strategy on all aspects of contentious claims from FNOL to final settlement and subrogation/recoveries.
Support Senior Claims Counsel on major/complex losses, as well as responsibility for own case load.
Provide legal advice and drafting support to claims adjusters, including in connection with coverage investigations, policy response and settlement negotiation.
Advise and support claims and underwriting in loss mitigation strategy and work-out solutions in pre-claim scenarios in bespoke lines of business.
Support Senior Claims Counsel in internal reporting, research and analysis of macro legal trends in claims and litigation.
Contribute to development of know-how and dissemination across the business, including attending relevant external events and delivering internal training.
Support Senior Claims Counsel and claims team in the instruction and management of external counsel.
Skills & experience
Solicitor qualified in England & Wales, United States or similar jurisdiction with not less than 3-4PQE (or equivalent).
Excellent technical legal skills and demonstrable experience of not less than five years in coverage advisory and dispute resolution in the insurance industry. Marine experience desirable but not essential. Opportunity to develop specific LOB/jurisdiction expertise within Claims Counsel function.
Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact with individuals across all levels of seniority.
Excellent commercial awareness of the insurance sector coupled with the ability to concisely and effectively advise non-legal business stakeholders, whilst maintaining awareness of wider commercial objectives.
Ability to effectively manage workload, to plan and prioritise accordingly, and to meet tight deadlines, whilst maintaining a high level of accuracy, attention to detail and professionalism.
Strong sense of personal accountability and self-motivation, with the ability to work individually and as part of a team.
High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (in particular, Word and Excel).
Willingness to work outside of core hours when required to meet business needs.
